Inspired by the Elements, what does that mean?
Eco-Inspired Planning

Message from Sheila Orchiston
Owner & Principal Planner

When creating my wedding and event planning business it was important to me to truly understand why I was choosing this path and this place. I really wanted to ensure the mission and philosophy behind my business was part of who I am and who I want to be in the years to come.

I care alot about people, community and the environment in which we live so it was important for me to infuse that into my work. The best term I felt represented my philosophy was eco-inspired. There was and is a lot of discussion around 'green weddings and green events' however for me, it wasn't just about going green with everything but rather being inspired by the elements to do what I could to minimize the impact on the environment and truly represent the people and the place authentically, be it for a wedding or an event. (Although going 'green' is a wonderful way to express yourself and your philosophy through your wedding/event. Our natural moments package is our signature eco-inspired package that does just that and can be incredibly chic and unique.) However, for me, it was more about making genuine moments for genuine people in a truly genuine place.

Choosing Tofino & Ucluelet was easy as I knew it was a place that I (and everyone who has experienced it) would be "inspired by the elements" and truly care. I have travelled quite a few places but the Clayoquot Sound in British Columbia with the small towns of Tofino & Ucluelet is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. I had been visiting the area for over 12 years before deciding it was the place I wanted to make 'home'. In this area, many of the people and businesses here have, or are, incorporating sustainable practices and care deeply about the environment in which they live and work.

Tofino & Ucluelet sit on the edge of the wild Pacific Ocean where whales, eagles and bears are often spotted. The natural beauty is unparalled and a perfect place for the celebration of life, love, family and friends. It is this beauty of the natural elements that thrive, wind, ocean, rugged rock, and magificent rainforest... that inspires me and so many others. So, I am using my experience in wedding/event planning and my love of the world to work with couples to ensure that their wedding celebration from engagement to their special day is one that everyone present will remember forever and feel really good about.

I am committed to helping you realize your wedding event dreams in one of the most stunning places on earth. I look forward to getting to know you and being a part of your moments!

5 things I want you to know about me

1. I am actively trying to infuse eco-minded thinking into all aspects of my life, but not there yet.

I am inspired like many, to become more aware of what and how much I consume and the affect this has locally and globally, but sometimes I just want what I want. I am inspired to reduce, reuse, and recycle, but sometimes I like to buy new things. I am inspired to own an electric vehicle, but I don't yet. I'm saving, but in the meantime I ride my beach cruiser most places and use my little 4-cylinder Mazda (that's just big enough to be functional, but not so big as to be wasteful) only when needed....most of the time.

This is what I mean by eco-minded...I'm no Rachel Carson...and I never will be, but I am trying to make a difference...and it's a work in progress.

2. I like the word "rare" and think it really works for describing both Tofino as a place and my goal as a Wedding/Event Planner.

The word 'Rare' (adj) is defined as 1. uncommon; unique 2. distinctive 3. occurring seldom a rare appearance 4. uncommonly great; extreme kind to a rare degree 5. exhibiting uncommon excellence; superlatively good or fine rare skill 6. highly valued because of its uncommonness a rare prize.

It's for this reason that I chose Rare Earth as the name for my Wedding and Event Consulting business.

3. I operate a different type of business.

What does that mean? Rare Earth is a business that seeks, above all, to make the world a better place. Yes, the legal structure of my company is for-profit. But my business model is based on values. Personal values. Social values. Environmental values. Cultural values. And economic values. I'm actively trying to make a difference as many of you are so having that at the base of my business makes each and every day of work meaningful and exciting!

4. I am a traveller and global citizen, but Canada is my home.

I have spent years traveling around the world from Africa, Japan, Greece, Australia to California and Hawaii.  Every place I go allows me to meet new people and learn new things. I travel to experience the diversity of the world, build new relationships, share stories and bring back unique and distinctive ideas. I love meeting others who have travelled and hearing their stories. In everything I do I look to those experiences. Canada is my home and is so diverse and stunning that I don't have to go far for the inspiration.

5. I have some hidden talents.

For whatever reason, I was blessed with mad skills when it comes to "envisioning" and "creating" one of a kind wedding or event celebrations. I credit this to my ability to think big picture while remembering the details. I consider this one of my hidden talents since most people either get lost in the minutiae or get overwhelmed by the whole. As far as my other hidden talents go: I take the time to discover the less obvious things in, did you know that Brad Pitt belonged to the Key Club and the Forensics Club in High School, and before he became an actor he supported himself as a chauffeur, a furniture mover and a costumed mascot for the restaurant, El Pollo Loco? Okay, I need that to leave my memory, but I'm a bit of a movie buff. Another talent I have is turning moments into memories...and even legacies. I transformed my own wedding celebration into a lasting legacy for the betterment of orphans in Zambia, Africa. Want to make the world a better place with your wedding too?
